Officials Lift Boil Water Alert For Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.,None — Officials lifted a boil water alert for the city of Daytona Beach Saturday morning. Results from water tests taken Friday indicate that there is no contamination in the city's water, according to officials.

The entire city of Daytona Beach was under a boil water advisory on Friday and city officials said it's because of storms from Thursday night.

Daytona Beach has been known for its world-class water, but officials said that wasn't the case on Friday.

"Just not a good day; I've had better days, yes," said a city official.

Residents said they had no idea that the city was under a precautionary boil water notice on Friday.

"I didn't even know about it, hadn't heard about it," said a resident.

The boil water notice began Thursday night when the city said they switched over to two generators to run the system during some storms, but there was a power surge at some point Thursday night, and the pumps shut themselves off. Officials said they were worried it could happen.

"If the pressure drops and stuff leaks in, it can contaminate the supply," said a city official.

The city said they issued the boil water warning around noon on Friday, but business owner Mike Rowe, who owns a pizza restaurant, said they never heard about it.

"It seems like if it was a precaution and it's for public safety, they could have let us know," said Rowe.

The city said preliminary tests revealed the water was safe to drink and boiling the water was a suggestion and not mandatory. Residents said they would have liked to have known to make that choice.

"I don't think it's very good. I mean what if something is in it?" said Rowe.

The boil water alert affected the entire city of Daytona Beach, but not South Daytona.
