ST. CLOUD, Fla. - The St. Cloud Police Department said a bicyclist was hospitalized Wednesday morning after a stormwater pipe caused a sidewalk to collapse.
Officials said the pipe collapsed sometime after midnight and caused the sidewalk above it to break apart.
Around 3:50 a.m., officers said the bicyclist fell into the hole on Old Canoe Creek Road, which is said to be about 12 feet deep.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The incident shut down Old Canoe Creek Road from Neptune Road to 13th Street in St. Cloud, police said.
The St. Cloud Police Department said the city’s public works department is working to identify the cause and has closed off the area indefinitely to make repairs, which could take several weeks.
Officials said the pipe was 10 feet in width and was used as an east/west channel for transporting stormwater.
Police are reviewing options for rerouting traffic during the repair project.
No other details were released.
