Snakes found slithering in Lake Baldwin

ORLANDO, Fla. — Residents in an Orange County neighborhood said Lake Baldwin is infested with snakes.

"I was just really nervous because a lot of the kids play around here," resident Patrick Johnson said.

Johnson said he noticed the snakes on Sunday.  He said he thought they were water moccasins so he posted signs around the lake that warned people to watch out.

"If someone dropped a hat or a ball in the water then they could easily get bit," Johnson said.

Johnson said city officials told him they won’t remove the snakes.

WFTV sent pictures to a local serpentarium where employees said the snakes are southern water snakes, which is a common, non-venomous snake often confused with water moccasins.

Experts said the snakes at Lake Baldwin were likely just hatched, and the ones that do survive will disperse in the next couple of months.
