Store Clerk Nearly Beaten To Death With Tools

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County family wants justice after a store clerk was viciously beaten during a robbery Friday night. The 74-year-old clerk, Luis Sanquirico, was savagely beaten by two men armed with a hammer and a wrench after they were refused alcohol because they did not have proper identification.

The incident happened at the ABC Fine Wine & Spirits store on Orange Blossom Trail, near Oakridge Road ( see map ) in Orlando.

One customer, who stepped in to try to stop the clerk from being attacked, was also beaten and was hospitalized. The two men were beaten so badly that the suspects, when caught, could face attempted murder charges.

According to the sheriff's office report, two Hispanic men were denied their purchase of alcohol because only one had proper identification. The men left the store and returned a few minutes later armed with a hammer and wrench that they used to beat their victims and damage the store.

"They didn't try to hurt him, they tried to kill him," said Luis Sanquirico Jr., the victim's son.

Three days after the attack, Sanquirico remains in the hospital trying to recover from the blows the suspects rained on his head.

"These people were possessed by the devil. I believe no one in their right mind would go do that especially to an older person," said Sanquirico Jr.

The customer who stepped in to help was released from the hospital Monday evening, but he has two skull fractures.

"This guy was an angel for us. He was the guy who stepped in between and we really believe they didn't kill my father because of him," said Sanquirico Jr.

Orange County sheriff's deputies are still looking for the suspects who attacked the clerk and customer. ABC Fine Wine and Spirits is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.
