On Monday afternoon, 17-year-old Johnny Barnes appeared before a judge for the first time since the shooting. He could be charged as an adult for the shooting that happened at the party at a house on Piedmont-Wekiva Road.
Barnes is accused of trying to kill several teenagers at the party, but the 17-year-old still walked into a courtroom with a smirk on his face. He faced a judge with his parents at his side.
As Barnes' parents left the juvenile justice center, his father cursed at the media.
"Do you have anything to say to the families of the teens who were shot?" asked WFTV reporter Nancy Alvarez.
Investigators now say the number of victims in Barnes' shooting rampage has reached ten. One of the victims, 18-year-old Keon Brooks, is a football player who just graduated from Apopka High School and was about to begin his college football career.
A childhood friend said the athlete was shot in both legs.
"The bullet went through both his legs. He almost bled to death," said Brooks' friend.
There are bullet holes all over the house in Apopka where about 30 teenagers were attending a party on Saturday night. Witnesses say an argument ensued then suddenly shots rang out.
"They started walking away and the guy started shooting," said the eyewitness, Brooks' friend.
Police caught up to Barnes at a gas station near the house and witnesses identified him as the shooter.
17-year-old Morgan Dargan is recovering in a hospital room with her father at her side after being shot in the calf.
"I got the worst phone call a parent could possibly get...'Daddy, I was shot,'" said Mike Dargan, parent of shooting victim. "My daughter had no idea who the shooter was from what I understand he took the gun out of his pocket and started shooting in every direction."
Investigators say they still do not know why Barnes opened fire. He said nothing but his name in court on Monday, but Morgan's father has a lot to say to him.
"Hopefully he'll change his ways. He's torn up a lot of hearts and messed up a lot of lives," said Dargan.
Investigators have not said if this was gang-related or why Barnes opened fire. He said nothing to the judge who ordered him to be detained until the state decides whether he will be tried as an adult.
WFTV checked to see how long Johnny Barnes could face in prison if he is convicted. He is charged with eight counts of second degree murder. Each count carries a maximum of 15 years behind bars so he could face up to 120 years in prison. Barnes will likely face additional charges, as a total of ten people were shot.
