Detroit Animal Care and Control officers were trying to reach the dog in Belle Isle State Park when it swam across the frigid river to a nearby island, MLive reported.

The team set up flotation devices and other rescue equipment but the dog went back over the ice to dry land where rescuers were able to catch it, MLive reported.

Animal control officers called Michigan Humane Animal Search and Rescue, which has the only team trained to perform water rescues in the area, WXYZ reported.

The dog was taken to the Michigan Humane Mackey Center for Animal Care for treatment of possible hypothermia.
