According to the Salt Lake Tribune and People magazine, the documentary filmmaker, who suffered from liver disease for decades and recently developed bile-duct cancer, died Friday at his Marin County, California, home.

The couple shared two children, Lena and Dylan, according to People.

“Jamie died today,” his wife of 32 years, Kyle Redford, tweeted Friday. “We’re heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many. He will be deeply missed.”

A representative for Robert Redford said the 84-year-old has requested privacy as he mourns his son, People reported.

“The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child,” the representative, Cindi Berger, told the entertainment outlet, adding that James Redford was “a loving son, husband and father” who had been devoted to his children, art, filmmaking and environmental causes. The pair founded the nonprofit Redford Center, which awards grants to filmmakers raising awareness about climate change, in 2005, People reported.

“It is with profound sadness that we grieve the loss of James Redford, our co-founder, our inspiration and our friend,” the center’s executive director, Jill Tidman, wrote in a Facebook post. “With Jamie came love and contagious joy. He approached everything he did with kindness and warmth, and an openness that spread itself easily among others.”
