In a now-deleted Facebook post, a New Hampshire state representative condoned vandalizing homes of people who advocate for the value of Black people’s lives.
“Public Service Announcement: If you see a [Black Lives Matter] sign on a lawn, it’s the same as having a porch light on at Halloween. You are free to burn and loot that house,” New Hampshire Rep. James Spillane wrote, according to The Associated Press.
The Republican legislator, who represents the cities of Candia, Deerfield and Nottingham in the State House, is now being investigated by the New Hampshire attorney general to determine if he violated the New Hampshire Civil Rights Act.
Many are calling for Spillane’s resignation.
“We received several complaints from members of the public that had forwarded the Facebook post to this office, along with their interpretation of the Facebook post and concerns that they could be victims of targets of violence as a result of the Facebook post,” said Sean Locke, Assistant New Hampshire Attorney General.
This isn’t the first time Spillane has been under fire for controversial comments.
In 2019, he was criticized for sharing a photo of a squirrel’s bloody carcass in response to a vegan animal rights activist.
“I shot a squirrel on my bird feeder today with a .50 caliber muzzleloader. Enjoy,” he wrote.
