South Florida girl, 17, electrocuted by fallen power line

SPRING HILL, Fla. — A South Florida girl died Sunday when she stepped on a live power line while attempting to escape her burning vehicle.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle driven by the unidentified 17-year-old girl collided with a power line knocked down by a fallen tree as severe storms swept through Hernando County, WTVT reported.

“I saw sparkling underneath the vehicle,” witness Maria Patchon told the TV station. “The next thing I know, I walk back out to look, and the car is inflamed. And the passenger door was open.”

When the girl stopped the vehicle, it caught fire on the driver’s side, prompting her to exit the Dodge Avenger on the passenger side, where she stepped on the live line, Bay News 9 reported.

The teenager died at the scene, WTVT reported.
