UCF Police Look To Buy New High Tech Cameras

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla — WFTV got a first look at a new type of crime fighting tool police at the University of Central Florida are looking at buying Thursday. It is a small camera officers can wear while on the job.

UCF police said they would be the first agency in Central Florida to use the high tech cameras. Law enforcement can clip the high tech device on their uniform or on their hat and it will record both audio and video.

"Wherever you're looking, that's what the camera sees," said William Hope with the UCF police.

Some law enforcement patrol cars have dash cams but UCF police told WFTV there is a benefit to having this type of recording device.

"Your in car camera is only going to see whats in front of you," Hope said. "This will show you that the officer did look both ways."

All the information that is recorded is then downloaded to a digital server.

Taser International makes the equipment. There are already a handful of officers at UCF who are testing them out at events like football games and traffic detail.

Hope said the cameras should be really good in helping the department establish facts in situations.

Police want to buy 40 cameras at $1,300 a piece. The University is working to find funding. Officers could be wearing the small cameras within the next few months.
