Wild Boar Lassoed In Home After Taser Doesn't Work

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A wild boar charged through a Melbourne neighborhood and then ran into a house Monday morning (images | raw video). The strange thing was the house isn't anywhere near woods; it was in the middle of a neighborhood near Eau Gallie Boulevard on Fillmore Avenue (see map).

Police tried to shock the animal with a Taser, but the prongs couldn't get through the boar's thick hide and they had to resort to the ways of the Wild West and lasso the boar inside the house.

It was a boar that knew no boundaries; animal control officers, police and trappers scrambled to try and capture it, running through backyards, front yards and even into a home. It was there that police tried stunning it with a Taser, but an officer said the boar's thick skin bent the electrified prong.

Trapper James Dean was ultimately able to get a rope around the 100-pound animal, securing it once and for all.

"You never know when they are going to go off,"

Authorities don't know where it came from, but think it probably got some help getting to this neighborhood.

If this was a true wild boar, you wouldn't be able to stick your hand in the crate and pet it. They believe it was probably domesticated, raised in the neighborhood near where it was found.

"They can tear you up. I've seen dogs that have been killed by wild pigs, I've seen where people have lost limbs from wild pigs," Dean said.

While it was charging at people on the street, Dean showed WFTV how it would drink straight from his water bottle.

"I've dealt with hundreds and hundreds of wild pigs. You couldn't do this if you took something like this out of the wild," he said.

Authorities said the boar was likely either being kept as a pet or raised for food.

It's illegal in a residential neighborhood to keep a wild boar. The trapper was waiting for instructions on what to do with it now.
