LAKE COUNTY, Fla.,None — One worker is dead and another was injured after an industrial accident Friday at De Witt Excavating on State Road-50 near the Lake-Orange County Line in Clermont, Lake County Emergency Medical Services said. It was business as usual until about 20 minutes before noon when authorities said two workers out on the property ran into trouble. "They were operating a cement crusher that recycles road material," said Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the crusher, which is about the size of a small dump truck, jammed. "And when it became clogged, they apparently went in to remove the clog, and something went wrong," Herrell said. Investigators believe the machine may have been running, trapping the workers inside. One employee was able to escape, but suffered severe injuries to his lower body. Deputies said the other employee, 20-year-old Delmas Ramsey, was stuck inside the crusher and was killed. While the survivor was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the victim who died could not be removed from the crusher until federal investigators with Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) arrived and had a chance to examine the site, and the cement crusher the victims were working on. "The crushing pieces, either gears or teeth, what have you. Like I said, the one was able to free himself, and the other unfortunately was not," Herrell said. The sheriff's office has not released the name of the survivor, but said he was alert and able to talk to firefighters as they pulled him out. In the meantime, the work to cut the machinery away from the body of the victim who died could take all night. De Witt Excavating has been at that location since the mid-1980s.
