Southern half of Florida to receive heavy rainfall, floods; Harvey to Texas

Deep tropical moisture will enhance shower activity in Florida. Harvey likely to produce floods in Texas.

Deep tropical moisture will move over Florida as a tropical disturbance crosses the state to end the week into the weekend.

Invest 92L is located over the Florida Keys and is barely moving at the moment. It will continue to hold in this position through Friday, feeding off the warm Caribbean waters. Floods are likely to develop across South Florida starting today through the weekend as the rain will be more persistent in this region.

The National Hurricane Center gives Invest 92L a low chance of developing into a tropical system in the short and long term. Its proximity to land and current wind shear is not allowing this system to develop further. Once the disturbance moves over the Atlantic, parallel to Central Florida, it could gain more organization; if this were to occur, it would be by the beginning of next week.

Central Florida also has the possibility of heavy rain through the weekend, but it will start off spotty Thursday and Friday morning, then becoming more numerous and perhaps consistent. The heaviest rain and highest amounts are forecast to remain focused over the southern portion of Central Florida; across Polk, Osceola and Brevard Counties. Here, rainfall could reach 1-3 inches. From Orange and Lake northward, rainfall could reach around 1 inch in some locations.

HARVEY

Harvey has redeveloped over the very warm waters of the
Gulf of Mexico. and it is forecast to continue moving very slowly and make landfall somewhere along the Texas coast by Saturday morning. Harvey is likely to bring very dangerous conditions. Some models estimate that rainfall could range between 10-15 inches and storm surge between 4 to 6 feet. If the trajectory follows current forecast, the heaviest rainfall will bring dangerous and life-threatening floods to Houston and surroundings areas and life-threatening storm surge to Galveston Bay. Harvey is stationary for now, and models vary on possible landfall locations. We will continue to monitor Harvey as well.

We will continue to update the evolution of Invest92L and will bring you the latest on Eyewitness News, wftv.com, and on our free WFTV Weather App.
