Thunderstorm activity was rather low for the most part Monday, but the storms that developed over Volusia County just after noon were strong.
A strong cluster of storms intensified as it moved east over Volusia County. Just after 1 p.m. Monday, the storms reached Port Orange, producing multiple lightning strikes and strong winds. Within 45 minutes, the storm was over the Atlantic.

Report: Florida leads nation in deaths caused by lightning
Lightning caused a house roof to catch on fire. The Port Orange and South Daytona Fire departments put out this fire quickly. There were no injuries reported.
All thunderstorms have lightning, but lightning is not an ingredient for a severe thunderstorm declaration. Thus, there could be hundreds of lightning strikes within a storms without a severe thunderstorm warning. In other to have a severe thunderstorm warning, the storm must produce at least 58 mph wind gusts and have one-inch hail.
