Violent Crime Task Force to discuss ways to curb gun violence in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A subcommittee of the Violent Crime Task Force will meet Tuesday to discuss ways to curb violence in Orange County.

New numbers show that 85 people have been killed in Orlando and Orange County this year.

That's lower than last year, but higher than 2014 when 68 people were killed.

County Commissioner Victoria Siplin said the gun violence could slow down if parents got involved.

Siplin said it's a collaborative effort between leaders and families.

“I'm sick and tired of the violence,” Siplin said. “It's just a matter of all of us working together to stop this violence.”

Siplin’s district includes Pine Hills, which is an area that has a 27 percent increase in the number of homicides this year.

Siplin is part of the task force that was created in May by Sheriff Jerry Demings.

Siplin said a possible plan to lower the crime rate includes getting the word out about jobs and after school programs.

“A lot of folks don't know where to go to find certain resources,” said Siplin. “Start getting into your children's lives.”

Siplin also said she wants security cameras installed in Pine Hills, and that the funding could come from a combination of county, state and federal dollars.
