Palm Bay man found dead in swimming pool after running from police, officers say

PALM BAY, Fla. — A Palm Bay man was found dead in a swimming pool after running from police, officers said.

Palm Bay police said an officer got behind a car on Corning Avenue near Polk Street on Sunday when the passenger, later identified as Michael Varilone, jumped out of the moving vehicle and was seen running into the nearby woods.

Reports indicated the officer called for backup, set up a perimeter around the woods and used a K-9 in an attempt to find Varilone.

Papers found in the woods showed that Varilone may have been heading to a home on Beacon Street NW, and while searching the home officers found the clothing and items Varilone was seen with as he fled from police, according to a report.

Police said the home belonged to Varilone’s parents and his parents told police he came and went often.

Officers issued an arrest warrant for Varilone for violating probation and resisting without violence.

Police said a further search of the home led them to discover Varilone inside an above ground swimming pool at the home.

Officer said he was found wedged between the stairs and the pool wall with his head just above the water.

According to a report, Varilone did not appear to be breathing when he was found in the pool.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue was called to the home and after life-saving aid was attempted, Varilone was pronounced dead at the scene.

No cause of death was given by police.
