Delta launches baggage-tracking system at OIA

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The new technology would go right on a traveler’s baggage tag and track every step of the way so the bag ends up at the correct baggage claim terminal.

Delta Airlines plans to roll out the system this summer at Orlando International Airport.

The microchip is embedded into the baggage tag, and Delta Airlines said it’s not even noticeable to travelers.

The new chip would replace the current system in which bags are scanned and then placed on flights. The chips would then trigger the system if it's on the wrong belt loader.

OIA told Eyewitness News it handles 50,000 pieces of luggage each day, and that Delta is one of its largest carriers.

Channel 9’s Racquel Asa asked Southwest Airlines and American Airlines to see if the companies plan to roll out similar technology, and both said not at this time.

American Airlines recently merged with US Airways and said right now it’s still working on combining both carrier operations. But a representative said it is looking at similar options in the future.

JetBlue said did not return our calls for comment.

Delta at Daytona and Melbourne International Airports will also get the microchip bag-tracking technology by the summer.
