Florida reports third day in a row of less than 5,000 new COVID-19 cases

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida reported an additional 3,312 COVID-19 cases on Monday.

The new cases bring the total number in the state since the pandemic began to 1,948,307.

Monday marked the third day in a row that the state reported fewer than 5,000 new cases.

Orange County reported the largest increase in cases with 162.

On Monday, the state also reported an additional 83 deaths across the state. That brings the total virus-related death toll in the state to 32,349.

The latest increases come as trials of an experimental drug that would fight the COVID-19 virus appear to show the medication stops the virus from replicating in the body, making it the first oral antiviral to do so, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The drug, called molnupiravir, is being developed by Ridgeback Biotherapeutics and is in pill form.

“We are very pleased to share our initial Phase 2 infectivity data,” Dr. Wendy Painter, chief medical officer of Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, said.
