BREVARD COUNTY Fla. — The historic Mathers Bridge in Indian Harbour Beach has reopened to boating traffic after being closed for nearly a month.
The bridge was closed on July 2 to allow crews to fix the motors that help open and close the 700-foot swing span bridge.

According to officials, the bridge suffered a mechanical failure earlier this year that prevented the bridge from operating.
The bridge will open on demand for boaters between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 24 hours on Friday, Saturday, and all federal holidays.

The $35,500 rehabilitation will allow for operations to continue until replacement parts can be produced and shipped from Germany.
The historic 700-foot swing span bridge, built in 1927, connects South Tropical Trail on the southern end of Merritt Island to the western end of Banana River Drive in Indian Harbour Beach.
