MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Mount Dora has selected Michael G. Dieppa as its next police chief, bringing a veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department back to Florida.
City Manager Vince Sandersfeld announced the selection Friday in an email shared with Channel 9. Dieppa is expected to begin in early December, although his official start date has not been finalized.
The announcement follows the retirement of former Police Chief Michael Gibson, who announced plans to leave Aug. 1.
Nearly 30 years of experience
Dieppa brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience, including serving as police chief in Chamblee, Georgia, and spending 27 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department, according to the city.
He also holds a doctorate in education in leadership and innovation.
“Following a comprehensive recruitment and selection process, I am confident that Dr. Dieppa brings the leadership experience, professional background, and commitment to public service necessary to continue moving our Police Department forward,” Sandersfeld wrote.
Chamblee named Dieppa its police chief in September 2023. He previously served as a major with Miami-Dade police.
Transition details still being finalized
Deputy Chief James Deleu has been serving as acting chief.
Sandersfeld thanked Deleu for taking on the additional responsibilities and for his continued service to the department and community.
The city has not announced a swearing-in date. Officials said information about the transition, ceremony and opportunities to meet Dieppa will be shared once arrangements are confirmed.
