ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County Mosquito Control crews are increasing targeted spraying after health officials confirmed a locally acquired case of dengue.
The Florida Department of Health in Orange County confirmed the human case Wednesday. County officials said mosquito control crews are focusing on the species known to transmit dengue and are directing treatment toward areas identified by health officials.

According to Orange County Mosquito Control, the mosquito species that primarily spreads dengue typically does not travel far and tends to remain near the area where it became infected.
“This virus is spread only by mosquitoes,” Orange County Mosquito Control Manager Steve Harrison said. “A person can contract dengue only after being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus. The mosquito becomes infected by biting a person who has the virus.”
Targeted spraying underway
Orange County routinely sprays for mosquitoes, but officials said crews are now concentrating additional efforts in areas of concern at the direction of the Florida Department of Health.
The county said chemicals used during mosquito-control operations are approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and are considered safe for use around people and animals.
Officials are also urging residents to take precautions to reduce mosquito bites and eliminate standing water around their homes.
