Oviedo Medical Center adds heart procedures to treat blocked arteries

The hospital launched its interventional cardiology program with a procedure on a 78-year-old patient

OVIEDO, Fla. — Oviedo Medical Center has launched an interventional cardiology program, adding catheter-based procedures to treat certain heart and vascular conditions, including narrowed or blocked arteries.

The hospital, part of HCA Florida Healthcare, announced the expansion after completing its first procedure under the new program. Hospital officials said the service could allow some patients to receive specialized treatment locally rather than travel to another facility.

The addition follows other expansions connected to the hospital, including a freestanding emergency room in Maitland that Channel 9 toured when it opened in 2024.

First patient treated for an 80% blockage

Dr. Caleb Mercado performed the inaugural procedure on a 78-year-old man with a history of coronary artery disease, according to the hospital.

The patient underwent balloon angioplasty to treat an 80% blockage in his circumflex artery. Hospital officials said he was recovering well.

Mercado worked alongside nurses, technologists and other cardiovascular specialists.

Interventional cardiology uses minimally invasive, catheter-based techniques to diagnose and treat certain heart and vascular conditions, according to the hospital.

Program took more than a year to develop

Hospital CEO Cameron Howard said the launch followed more than a year of planning and collaboration among physicians and staff.

“Bringing interventional cardiology here means our patients can access more advanced cardiovascular services in the community they call home,” Howard said.

The new program expands the hospital’s existing cardiovascular services, which include medical cardiology, cardiac catheterization and cardiopulmonary care.

Oviedo Medical Center is a 96-bed hospital serving eastern Seminole County and surrounding communities. It is located near the intersection of Red Bug Lake Road and State Road 426, adjacent to State Road 417.

More information about its services is available on the hospital’s website.
