ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A medical examiner in Volusia County has determined that a bone fragment that washed ashore Monday is estimated to be hundreds of years old, officials said.
A man vacationing in Ormond Beach found the top of a human cranium buried in the sand.
“(It) definitely set the bar higher for what I might be able to find, that’s for sure,” said John Baier who found the bones.
Officials with the medical examiner’s office determined due to the age of the skull, it holds no significant investigatory value and has been sent to the anthropology department at the University of Florida for further study and carbon dating, officials said.
“I hope Florida has a home for it where it can be displayed and other people can enjoy it or find a proper resting place one way or another,” Baier said.
This isn’t the first time that human bones have recently been found in Volusia County.
Investigators said a hunter found bones in November in a wooded area near Ormond Beach. Human bones were also found in dunes eroded by Hurricane Matthew in Flagler County in November.
