1 killed in officer-involved shooting at Walmart in Mississippi

One person was killed at a Walmart in Mississippi on Wednesday evening.

RICHLAND, Miss. — One person was killed during an officer-involved shooting at a Walmart in Mississippi on Wednesday, authorities said.

Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the shooting occurred at a store in Richland, located south of Jackson, at about 5:45 p.m. CST, WJTV reported.

According to agents, the MBI and officers from the Richland Police Department were responding to an alleged hostage situation, WLBT-TV reported. Initially, officers said they responded to an incident at the store involving a weapon, according to the television station.

MBI officials said the suspect involved in the shooting is dead, WJTV reported. Officials said there are no other known injuries.

The MBI said it would share its findings with the state’s attorney general’s office when its investigation is complete, according to the television station.

“We can confirm it is an officer-involved shooting at Walmart around 5:45 p.m.,” Allison Clark, a spokesperson for the Richland Police Department, told WLBT. “Walmart is cleared and secure.”

Clark added that the store was closed after the shooting. It was unclear whether the store would be open on Thursday.

It was unclear what led to the shooting. The identity of the shooter has not been released.
