Illinois tourist dies in rough storm currents off Florida coast

DESTIN, Fla. — A 19-year-old swimmer from Illinois drowned off the coast of Florida after getting caught in a rip current caused by the remnants of Hurricane Delta.

Witnesses tried to help Dakota Pierce, but they also needed to be rescued by lifeguards after struggling in the rough currents.

Another swimmer was also rescued. The 22-year-old man from Illinois was taken to a hospital where he is recovering.

Pierce was not breathing when he was pulled from the water. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hurricane Delta made landfall Friday night as a Category 2 storm.
