In a news release, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it was looking into the officer-involved shooting. The agency identified the woman shot as Tierra Vachon.

Vachon’s family told WSB-TV that Vachon went to Booker T. Washington High School, which her daughter attends, to “defend” her daughter, and pulled out her gun in self-defense.

In a statement to WSB-TV, Atlanta Public Schools said: “A parent came to the campus with a weapon and began waving it in the direction of students, employees and an Atlanta Public Schools Officer. The officer ordered the parent to drop the weapon. When the parent did not comply with the order, the officer fired one shot which struck the parent in the hand.”

The GBI said Vachon’s injury is non-life-threatening and she remains in stable condition at the hospital. She was charged with carrying weapons on school property, disrupting public school, and obstruction of law enforcement.

The GBI said it will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting, and once complete, will turn it over to the district attorney’s office.
