Recall alert: Sabra recalls hummus distributed in 16 states amid salmonella risk

QUEENS, N.Y. — Sabra Dipping Co. LLC announced Monday it is voluntarily recalling its popular Sabra hummus after a routine test by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration revealed a potential salmonella contamination.

The recall affects 2,100 tubs of the brand’s classic hummus sold in 16 states, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Jersey, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Specifically, the recall is limited to a batch of the brand’s 10-ounce classic hummus with the UPC number 300067. The product was produced on Feb. 10, 2021, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 12:00 midnight and bears a “best before” date of April 26.

“No other Sabra products are affected by this recall,” the company stated in a news release, noting that the product is already more than “halfway through its shelf life.”

“It’s unlikely you’ll find this product on the shelf,” Sabra stated.

To date. no illnesses or complaints have been reported in connection with the potentially contaminated hummus, the company confirmed.

According to figures compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella causes an estimated 1.35 million illnesses and roughly 420 deaths annually.

Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It can be fatal in the most severe cases, the CDC stated.
