Shelter puppies drown after flash floods swamp Missouri animal rescue

ST. PETERS, Mo. — A Missouri animal rescue is pleading for help after 10 of the facility’s puppies drowned when torrential downpours spawned flash floods across the St. Louis area Tuesday morning.

According to KTVI, Stray Paws Adoptables in St. Peters is in desperate need of both foster families and donations to help offset Tuesday’s loss and damages.

“Fly high little ones,” Stray Paws Adoptables wrote in one of several Facebook posts regarding the flooding. “Our hearts are breaking.”

According to The Washington Post, at least one person died in the flash floods, while thousands of residents were trapped in their cars and homes as the rainfall shattered a record set more than 100 years ago.

Responding fire crews were able to transport Stay Paws’ 15 adult dogs to dry land, KMOV reported.

According to the TV station, the nonprofit rescue takes in dogs from other kill shelters and those that have medical conditions.

Meaanwhile, staff members told KMOV that they fought the floodwaters for hours trying to get to the endangered dogs, but their efforts failed.

St. Louis recorded more than 9 inches of rain by Tuesday afternoon, or roughly 2 inches more than the 7-inch record set in August 1915, when remnants of a hurricane that made landfall in Galveston, Texas, passed through the area, the Post reported.
