SAN ANTONIO — A Texas woman was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison for driving drunk and hitting a pedestrian who turned out to be her nephew.
Rebecca DeLeon pleaded guilty to a charge of “intoxication manslaughter” and was given a 20-year sentence as part of the plea, KSAT reported.
Police had said DeLeon had a blood-alcohol content of 0.216% on Sept. 27, 2020, when she lost control of her car and hit a pedestrian crossing the street in San Antonio, KENS reported. That victim was Carlos Sifuentes, her nephew. He died at the scene from his injuries.
In Texas, you are considered legally intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08%, meaning DeLeon was nearly three times over the legal limit.
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales told KSAT that this wasn’t the first time DeLeon had been drunk behind the wheel. She had two prior convictions for driving under the influence. “Her nephew’s death was a result of her bad decisions. I hope that it gives the Sifuentes family some peace,” Gonzales told KSAT.
