The National Hurricane Center said Larry is getting larger and a bit stronger.
Forecasters said they expect steady to rapid intensification over the next few days.
Weather officials said maximum sustained winds have increased to near 80 mph.
Larry is expected to become a major hurricane by Friday night.
It is still too early to tell where the storm will go.
5 a.m. update
Larry is expected to continue to strengthen and is expected to become a major hurricane by Friday night.
Meteorologist Brian Shields said Larry is forecast to become the third major hurricane of the season. Hurricane Grace and Hurricane Ida were also major hurricanes this hurricane season.
