‘My rent went up $500 a month’: Orange County leaders say rent issue is likely beyond their control

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A new study of rent prices in Orange County fell short of declaring a housing emergency despite the fact rent jumped 25% last year.

People say rent in Orange County is just too high.

“My rent went up $500 a month. There’s something wrong with that,” an Orange County resident said.

The study, done at the request of commissioners, said the complex issue is likely beyond the county’s control.

Researchers said the problem stems from years of inadequate housing production that is not keeping pace with population growth.

The report said that if implemented, a temporary rent ceiling would do little to mitigate the current problem and could have unintended consequences.

Channel 9′s Christy Turner is digging into the report.

She has reached out to Commissioner Emily Bonilla, who called for the study to be done, to get her response to the findings.
