Florida crime rates drops, but rape, murder rates rise in 2016

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida's overall crime rate is dropping, but reports of murders, rapes and car thefts increased during the first half of 2016.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Monday released statistics that showed the overall crime rate decreased 3.4 percent over a six-month period this year.

“The results of the Semi-Annual 2016 Annual Crime Report are testimony to the dedication and hard work of deputy sheriffs and law enforcement officers across the state. This report also demonstrates the need to stay vigilant and properly train and equip law enforcement so that we can be most effective,” Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said.

But there were 561 murders in the first half of the year, a jump of 15.2 percent. The total includes the 49 people who were shot and killed at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Last year, there were 487 murders from January to June.

There were 3,769 reported rapes in Florida, an increase of 1.9 percent over the first half of 2015.

Still, Gov. Rick Scott heralded the overall lower crime rate.

“Florida’s steadily decreasing crime rate is a true testament to the hard work and commitment of our brave law enforcement officers. As the crime rate continues to decrease, it is clear that our shared goal of creating safe neighborhoods is working,” Scott said.

The crimes that went down from the last year include robberies, burglaries and aggravated assault.
