‘It could’ve been worse’: Sisters recovering after hit-and-run crash, driver still on the run

ORLANDO, Fla. — A family is pleading for the public’s help to find the driver of a dark-colored SUV. They said the driver is responsible for two sisters still in the hospital a week after a near fatal hit-and-run in Lake Nona.

“It’s hard to take in. They are still so young,” Kayla King said.

Kayla King shared pictures of her sisters, Bonnie, 20, and Raquel, 24, in Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center Intensive Care Unit.

“I couldn’t believe it. My heart dropped,” she said.

King’s sisters are victims of a hit-and-run. The crash happened on Dec. 2 at around 7:30 p.m. on the southbound side of Narcoossee Road, near Dowden Road in Lake Nona.

“This would be the vehicle. The dark SUV,” King said. “He hit my sister’s driver’s side, and as you can see it caused her to veer off the road.”

The impact was so bad that their car’s front end was wrapped around a tree.

King talked about how her sisters are doing since the crash.

“One of them is in ICU. She’s in bad shape. We have good faith she’ll pull through. The other one has a lot of broken bones,” she said. “To have a stranger do this and leave them there for dead — thankfully, they are not dead — but it could’ve been worse.”

A good Samaritan stopped to help and dialed 911 that night. The driver of the dark-colored SUV sped off.

“I hope they catch him,” King said. “I know we don’t have much information, but I don’t know how he can sleep at night knowing they did this.”

Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash on Dec. 2 to reach out to them.
