‘I didn’t want nobody to die’: Amazon driver credited with helping family escape fire

SYOSSET, N.Y. — A delivery driver in New York is being called a hero after alerting a Long Island family to a fire at their home on Saturday.

Kevin Rivera was making his delivery rounds in Syosset when he saw the fire at a home on Bluebird Drive, WABC reported.

“I parked up and I saw a small fire,” Rivera told WABC.

Rivera, who works for Amazon, said the fire was getting big fast, and that he could see people inside the house through an open door.

“I just rushed in, because I didn’t want nobody to die in that house,” Rivera told WCBS. “Everybody is calling me a hero.”

Inside, there were six or seven people, who initially did not understand Rivera’s warning because of a language barrier, WCBS reported.

“I was like telling them to get out of the house. They went back inside so I rushed inside to get them out, and I was telling them to go out through the back of the house,” Rivera told WABC.

In a news release, the Nassau County Police Department said that nine fire departments responded to the blaze, which severely damaged the house. A neighbor’s house was also damaged by the intense heat from the fire.

One fireman was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries reported.

“To be honest, I just feel great that I did something,” Rivera told WCBS.

The Nassau County Police Department said the investigation into what started the fire is ongoing.
