2 killed in hit & run crash in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a driver they say caused a crash in Lake County that killed two people, then left the scene.

Troopers responded to State Road 46 near the intersection with Wekiva Pines Blvd. in Sorrento just after 6:30 p.m. for a crash involving multiple vehicles.

According to investigators, the driver of a vehicle described only as a possibly red sedan was Westbound on SR-46 attempting to pass other cars in an area designated as a no-pass zone due to construction in the area.

Troopers say another vehicle driven by a 22-year-old Orlando man was headed eastbound and swerved to avoid the oncoming car but overcorrected and ended up driving into oncoming traffic.

Troopers say the 22--year-old driver struck a third car head-on. The at-fault vehicle also sideswiped the third vehicle before leaving the scene, continuing westbound on SR-46.

A 56-year-old Eustis woman who was driving the third vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the second vehicle, identified only as a 19-year-old Eustis woman, died later at Central Florida Regional hospital. The 22-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a red passenger vehicle, possibly a Hyundai, with damage and black paint transfer on the driver’s side.
