APOPKA, Fla. — An Apopka man has been arrested on charges he was under the influence when he crashed his vehicle into a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Apopka police said.
Sonny Almanza, 25, of Apopka, was driving a gray Nissan Friday morning near Benbow Court and Orange Blossom Trail in Apopka when he struck a car driven by Deputy Cheyenne Dasilva, investigators said. Police said Almanza continued to drive after she was hit.
Almanza admitted to investigators that he smoked marijuana Thursday night.
He gave a Breathalyzer test and blew a .000 blood alcohol content. Police said he failed his field sobriety test. He stood with a sway, lost balance twice, missed heel to toe exercises, as well as a few other tests.
Almana was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of cocaine and possession of drug equipment.
The deputy was not injured.
