Belle Isle City Council sees backlash for having more appointed members than elected members

BELLE ISLE, Fla. — Most of the members of the Belle Isle City Council haven’t won their seat in an election.

As of last night, the council has appointed four of its seven members. Channel 9 has found out the whole process is legal.

Two commissioners resigned with a year left on their terms, leaving two spots open. The city charter allows for the council, not the voters, to pick their replacements.

Stan Smith was appointed to District 6. Jim Partin was in the District 6 seat, but resigned because of redistricting and volunteered for District 7. He was appointed to that district last night.

That means there are four appointments and three elected officials on the city council.

At least one commissioner made clear he did not like the process, and one member of the community plans to file a complaint with the ethics commission
