Brevard County man rearrested on murder charge after teen e-bike crash

West Melbourne 14-year-old dies after alleged hit-and-run crash in Brevard County.

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — A 14-year-old boy has died from injuries he suffered when he was allegedly struck by a vehicle while riding an e-bike, and the suspect has been rearrested on a second-degree murder charge, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the teen as Hunter Russey with the consent of his family.

Investigators previously announced the arrest of 32-year-old Kavan Vishnubhai Patel on Oct. 13, after he allegedly intentionally struck Russey with his vehicle and left the child at the scene without providing aid or telling police officers he had hit him.

Russey was found unresponsive along Cocoanut Grove Avenue on the morning of Oct. 13 and was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert with severe injuries.

Due to the extent of his injuries, Russey was later transferred to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where he remained on life support.

Despite round-the-clock medical care, Russey’s family made the heartbreaking decision to remove him from life support Saturday evening, according to authorities.

Following Russey’s death, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Patel. He was rearrested shortly after 10 a.m. on Sunday and is now charged with second-degree murder.

Patel is being held at the Brevard County Jail without bond, authorities said.

The West Melbourne Police Department expressed its condolences to Russey’s family and friends, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.
