Cape Canaveral lifts temporary water restrictions as treatment plant returns to normal

Cape Canaveral residents may resume normal water usage after the city officially lifted all temporary restrictions

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Cape Canaveral residents can resume normal household water use after the city lifted temporary restrictions on Tuesday.

The wastewater treatment plant has returned to normal operations following heavy rain and flooding. Residents can catch up on laundry, run dishwashers and return to their usual water use.

“Normal water use may resume!” the city said in an advisory, thanking residents for helping reduce strain on the wastewater system.

The restrictions were put in place to keep the treatment plant from becoming overloaded during several days of heavy rain across Brevard County.

Local rainfall totals over a 24-hour period included:

  • Port Canaveral: 7.29 inches
  • City Hall: 5.31 inches
  • Wastewater treatment plant: 3.26 inches

Southern Brevard saw the heaviest rain, with some areas receiving more than 20 inches in 24 to 36 hours. City officials compared the flooding to Tropical Storm Fay in August 2008.

Although the rain has eased, the ground remains saturated, and standing water may linger on roads and in low-lying areas. Officials urged residents to follow local traffic notices and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.

“Never drive through flooded roadways,” the city warned.
