BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard County health officials issued a 60-day rabies alert today after a wild raccoon tested positive for rabies in Melbourne, warning residents to avoid contact with wildlife and to keep pets leashed and vaccinated.
The alert covers an area bounded by West Eau Gallie Boulevard (north), Sarno Road (south), Croton Road (east) and North Wickham Road (west), following an Aug. 27 capture of the infected raccoon near Andrews Avenue.
Officials advise:
- Avoid contact with wild animals, including raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes.
- Keep pets supervised and on a leash; keep livestock secured and vaccinations current.
- Do not feed or attract wildlife; secure trash and outdoor pet food.
Anyone bitten or scratched should seek medical care and report it to DOH-Brevard at 321-634-6337, option three. If a pet or livestock animal is bitten, get immediate veterinary care and call Brevard County Animal Services at 321-633-2024.
