14-year-old arrested after 17-year-old shot and killed on bike trail in Titusville, police say

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Titusville police confirmed Friday that a 14-year-old has been arrested and charged after the death of a 17-year-old this week.

Officers said Laneitri L. Rollins, 14, of Mims has been charged with first degree murder.

Detectives said Rollins shot Mercutio Burford, 17, of Titusville, Wednesday along a bike trail near Washington Avenue.

Officers said Burford was found in a ditch by someone on the trail and taken to a hospital in “grave” condition.

Burford died at the hospital and police have been searching for his killer, investigators said.

Officers said someone nearby told them they saw the assailant jump a fence and run south from the area where Burford was found.

Officers said they don’t believe the shooting was random and Rollins knew Burford.
