Casselberry man fights to keep homemade BMX track

CASSELBERRY, Fla.,None — A Casselberry property owner may have lost his fight to keep a world-famous BMX track.

The trail on North Winter Park Drive has been open for years without any problems.

But as WFTV's Q McCray reports, the city told the owner it's plowing the track and putting a lien against his home.

Aaron Sarkisian wanted WFTV with him Wednesday morning when he confronted the city of Casselberry about saving his BMX trail, but city workers would only talk to him in private.

The city council unanimously agreed to bulldoze his life's work. Sarkisian and his pals built the BMX jumps by hand in his front yard.

The "Casselberry Trail" is now considered a mecca for BMX riders around the world.

"It's like a someone taking a child away from you. Thirteen years of something you've been working on," Sarkasian said.

He said they began building trail in 1998, but the city started threatening to bulldoze the course about six months ago, claiming the ramps of clay are a flood plain violation and that Sarkasian never applied for the right permits.

"We've given them the permit application, the $500 fee they've asked for and the partial survey," Sarkasian said.

Code enforcement turned down WFTV's on-camera interview request and said they cited the bike course back in 2008 and Sarkasian never complied.

Sarkasian said he never got the citation.

WFTV asked for an official copy to see for ourselves.

Code enforcement also referred WFTV to public works, but they also refused comment.

"If it were for the betterment of the city of Casselberry, then they'd say it on camera," Sarkasian said.

Code enforcement said Sarkisian has accumulated more than $100,000 in code enforcement fines since 2008, and police have visited the house for several noise complaints.

They estimate it will cost as much as $12,000 to plow the property, but won't say when they're going to do it.

Meanwhile, Sarkisian is looking for legal help.
