HAWAII — While the Atlantic hurricane season has been quiet, a second tropical system is threatening Hawaii this season.
Three hurricanes are now churning in the eastern Pacific, with Hurricane Lowell potentially getting close to the islands early next week.
The 5 pm EDT advisory from the National Hurricane Center had Lowell with winds of 140 mph, making it a powerful Category 4 major hurricane.
Lowell is located south of the Hawaiian Islands and is moving westward.
However, the hurricane is expected to make a big turn northward this weekend and move toward the western Hawaiian Islands.
The island of Kauai is in the updated forecast cone.
Lowell is expected to weaken some over the next several days but could still be a Category 2 storm on its closest pass to the state.
While there is uncertainty about Lowell’s exact track, portions of Hawaii could be impacted by storm surge, wind, and heavy rain early next week.
Interests in Hawaii should closely monitor future forecasts.
Regardless of its exact track, Lowell will send large swells to the islands increasing the surf and rip current threats.
Hawaii has hit by Hurricane Lala in mid-August, which severely island the big island of Hawaii.
Over in the Atlantic, conditions remain quiet and no major activity is expected over the next 7 days.
