ORLANDO, Fla. — Hispanic Heritage Month officially began Tuesday, kicking off a month of celebrations across Central Florida.
The annual observance runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 and recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.
Orange County commissioners recognized Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month during Tuesday’s commission meeting and said this year’s theme is “Unidos, Somos Más,” or “Together, We Are More.”
“The contributions of our Hispanic and Latino communities have helped shape the character and spirit of Orange County,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said in a statement announcing the county’s celebrations. “Their heritage is woven into the story of who we are today.”
There are some events that are already planned across Central Florida.
Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibition
The City of Orlando kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month Tuesday with an opening reception for its annual Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibition at Orlando City Hall.
The exhibit at the Terrace Gallery features work from local visual artists inspired by this year’s theme, “Unidos, Somos Más.”
The exhibition will remain on display through Nov. 5.
Hispanic Heritage Weekend at Boxi Park
Boxi Park in Lake Nona will hold a Hispanic Heritage Weekend from Sept. 17 through Sept. 20.
The celebration will include live music throughout the weekend, along with salsa dancing Friday, a photo booth Saturday and family activities Sunday.
Sunset at the Zoo: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens in Sanford will celebrate Hispanic heritage on Sept. 25 as part of its Sunset at the Zoo series.
The event is expected to feature music, games, cultural activities and animal enrichment opportunities.
