ORLANDO, Fla. — Consumer adviser Clark Howard shared strategies to help families save money on back-to-school supplies before the new academic year begins.

He recommended creating strict shopping lists, reusing existing gear like backpacks, and utilizing discount retailers such as Walmart and Target.
Additionally, Howard suggested leveraging charity drives and digital price-tracking tools to secure the best deals while avoiding unnecessary impulse purchases.
Tips for In-Store
Shopping in stores can provide some of the largest discounts for families. Retailers like Walmart Inc., Dollar Tree and Target offer reduced pricing on basic school supplies. Consumer Adviser Howard noted that these low prices are often used as a hook to attract shoppers into the store.
Howard advised consumers to remain disciplined and be willing to walk away from a purchase to stay on track with their list, regardless of how trendy a product may appear.

For those who prefer to shop online, digital resources can help identify the best time to buy. “Using price tracking tools throughout the year can help you find when prices are at their lowest,” Howard said. “Like using Google’s shopping tool.”
