UPDATE: Construction worker dies after being struck by lightning in Deltona, deputies say

DELTONA, Fla. — A man is dead after being struck by lightning while working on a roof in Deltona, according to Volusia County officials.

Crews responded to Sterling Pointe Drive around 2 p.m. Witnesses said they saw the coworker standing on the roof of a housing working on the framing when a lightning bolt struck him, causing him to fall to the concrete below, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, later identified as 24-year-old Edvin J. Velasquez Cinto, was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Though the initial examination indicates a lightning strike, an official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, according to the sheriff’s office.
