Crews in Volusia County working to protect shoreline as storm batters coast

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The current storm hitting Central Florida is bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the coast and shoreline erosion and flooding are expected.

Homeowners are concerned and crews in Volusia County are working hard to protect at-risk properties.

Many people haven’t been able to get permits to rebuild their seawalls that were wiped out during last year’s hurricanes.

And it’s not just individual homeowners having problems, even condos and beachfront hotels have parts of their property falling into the ocean.

County officials said they’ve already seen significant erosion with this system.

“We’re still in the midst of it. The peak is still gonna be throughout the day today. As far as peak tide it was today at noon and then again at night tonight and tomorrow,” said Volusia County spokesperson Kevin Captain.

Volusia County officials have been working with state and federal partners since Saturday when the storm was approaching.

Captain said it’s been a challenge, even at low tide, pointing to problems accessing the already eroded coastline.

“We gotta get through the remainder of the storm but staff is out there when they can be to assess things,” Captain said.

Meanwhile, many homeowners have been fighting for permits to rebuild since the fall.

“In Wilbur By the Sea, the properties that were severely damaged by the hurricanes, there’s been no movement on any of those properties,” said Krista Goodrich of Salty Dog Property Management.

It’s a concern as a construction deadline approaches on May 1.

Some crews can’t get to work until after turtle nesting season is complete.
