DUNNELLON, Fla. — A Levy County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a driver overnight following a pursuit that spanned two Florida counties, authorities said.
The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment following the encounter.
The incident began when the deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in Levy County. Sheriff’s office officials said the vehicle’s registered owner had an active felony warrant out of Pinellas County.
The driver initially pulled over, but drove away when the deputy ordered him to exit the vehicle.
The deputy pursued the vehicle across county lines into neighboring Marion County.
The driver eventually stopped near the 23,200 block of West Highway 40 and ran into a wooded area on foot.
During the foot pursuit, authorities said the driver pointed a gun at the deputy. The deputy then fired their gun, striking the driver.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
