DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Daytona Beach police officer suffered minor injuries during a shootout with an armed man Monday afternoon.
Ian Garner, 19, opened fire on three officers at the Lumina Motel on Ridgewood Ave., according to Daytona Police Chief Jakari Young. The officers were responding to a robbery call.
Chief Young said an associate of Garner’s called police claiming Garner robbed him of a cell phone and $500.
“Three of my officers returned fire,” said Chief Young. “So FDLE is going to be taking part in this investigation and taking over that part because we did fire back at the suspect.”
One of the officers suffered minor injuries, believed to have been caused by shrapnel from the gunfire.
After the shootout, Garner barricaded himself inside the motel room. A standoff continued for hours, forcing police to reroute traffic away from the area and block off streets.
The SWAT team made entry inside the room and found Garner with serious injuries.
“He did suffer what we believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” said Chief Young. Garner was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Garner has a lengthy criminal record which includes armed robbery and burglary charges. He was arrested at least 11 times, Chief Young said.
A court date has not been set.
