SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A mother’s legal battle after letting her 5-year-old son walk alone in a gated community has fueled a national debate over parental discretion and child safety laws.
In August, a judge handed Karyann Parkinson a six-month suspended jail sentence and ordered her name placed on the Virginia Child Abuse and Neglect Registry for seven years.
Parkinson, who is appealing her conviction, stated she knew her son would need to cross the street but believed he was safe because he was familiar with the neighborhood.
A similar incident occurred in Florida, where a Seminole County mother was arrested in 2024 and charged with child neglect.
Authorities said her two children walked over a mile alone to a Walmart in Casselberry.
Florida’s child-neglect statute does not automatically define independent, unsupervised activities as neglect.
Under state law, child neglect occurs specifically when a child’s health or safety is placed at risk.
